Labeling machines come in a wide variety of types, with numerous materials and shapes for labels, and the objects to be labeled encompass many different types and categories, each with its own specific labeling requirements. For example, some applications call for only a single body label; others require double labels; still others demand three labels—body, shoulder, and neck; and some need only a sealing label. Moreover, production and packaging requirements can vary significantly. To meet these diverse labeling needs, labeling machines are highly diversified, with differences in both labeling processes and the structural design of their components, while also sharing certain common features.
(1) Label materials used by labeling machines include pressure-sensitive labels, pressure-sensitive films, electronic monitoring films, barcodes, paper labels, and more. Such labeling machines are referred to as pressure-sensitive labelers or paste‑on labelers.
(2) Labeling machines can be classified according to the type of label into self-adhesive labeling machines and paste‑on labeling machines.
(3) Based on the degree of automation, labeling machines can be classified into semi-automatic, fully automatic, and manual types.
(4) Based on the operating orientation of the container, labeling machines can be classified as vertical labelers and horizontal labelers.
(5) According to the labeling process characteristics, labelers can be classified into pressure‑type labelers, roller‑type labelers, roll‑and‑brush type labelers, and brush‑type labelers.
(6) Based on the shape of the packaging bottle, labeling machines can be categorized into square-bottle labelers, round-bottle labelers, flat-bottle labelers, and small irregular‑shaped bottle labelers, among others; additionally, there are square‑surface labelers, curved‑surface labelers, and card‑type labelers.
(7) Based on the length of the label applied, labeling machines can be classified into single-sided, double-sided, three-sided, and multi-sided types. Additionally, they may be categorized according to the material of the packaging container (e.g., tinplate cans, glass bottles, paper cartons), the labeling mechanism, and the type of adhesive used.
Applications of Labeling Machines: Labeling machines are widely used for applying labels to product packaging containers and boxes across various industries.
(1) Beverage industry. Applications in the beverage sector demand high speed and precise positioning, often involving multiple labels per bottle. Coupled with frequent changes in label shapes and materials, label‑application processes place extremely high demands on positional control.
(2) The daily‑chemical industry. Applications in this sector are constantly evolving due to the wide variety of container shapes. Flexible plastic containers and “label‑free visibility” further complicate label‑application accuracy and bubble‑elimination control.
(3) Food industry. The food manufacturing sector is highly competitive; multi-layer labels provide manufacturers with greater opportunities for marketing and promotion, while also posing new challenges for label‑applying machine design.
(4) Card‑making industry. In the card‑making process, high‑speed printing of cryptographic codes is typically accompanied by code verification and overprinting; however, conventional methods such as silk screening or hot stamping often become production bottlenecks when applying these overlays. Currently, designers have boldly explored alternative approaches, replacing silk screening with label‑applying technology to create a card‑production line that integrates coding, inspection, and label‑based overprinting. This innovative solution incorporates greater creativity, adds more production steps and flexible configurations, and more effectively meets users’ evolving manufacturing requirements.
(5) The healthcare industry. The medical supplies manufacturing sector is increasingly adopting pressure-sensitive labels; in addition to their labeling function, these labels also serve other functional purposes. Consequently, the design of label‑applying machines must be tailored to accommodate the specific characteristics of these labels.
(6) Pharmaceutical Industry. The pharmaceutical manufacturing sector is a major user of automated labeling systems, with extremely high speed requirements. Labeling machine design must also account for seamless integration with upstream and downstream processes, offering additional features such as pre-label visual inspection and automatic bottle‑holding mechanisms after labeling.
(7) Petrochemical industry. In the petrochemical sector, product labels are typically applied to large containers such as drums and bottles, where speed and precision requirements are relatively relaxed. However, because these labels are sizable, they place significant demands on the labeling machine’s drive system. Moreover, when applying large‑area labels to curved surfaces or labeling on uneven‑speed production lines, ensuring that the label surface remains flat is another key design consideration.
(8) Battery Industry. The battery manufacturing sector has widely adopted automatic labeling machines for applying shrink‑wrap labels to reels. These systems must operate at high speeds while ensuring smooth, seamless label joints, preventing short circuits, and simultaneously enabling label shrinkage.
